Two Poems

by Fae Kayarian

The Color Blue

I study the pathologies of memory.
You can only imagine how ironic it was
when I found you caught in the net I had only cast for others.

I see it in your sea storm eyes.
You know that something is missing,
but you are too tangled to be set free and find it.

You are the version of Ulysses who never returned home.
Every time I see you step from your vessel,
I cannot recognize the person I have known my whole life.

So please, remember the color blue.
It is the color that has crafted the tides,
that paints the memories of the ocean, of the sea.

Fae Kayarian reads “The Color Blue”:

It’s been six years

care to see
how a pink maple tree
shines in honest truth
amid the white
gravestones.

i miss the days
i visited you
in the hospital room
instead of reaching for you
earth deep.

Fae Kayarian lives in Boston, MA, where she is enrolled as an undergraduate student in the Behavioral Neuroscience program at Northeastern University. Fae also works at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, where she conducts clinical research using noninvasive brain stimulation. She aspires to become a neurologist and to use creative writing platforms to contribute to the medical humanities. When she is not in the hospital or the library, Fae enjoys biking along the esplanade, playing ukulele and embarking on her endless quest to discover the best sushi venue in Boston.
