Lettering Hope by Patricia Tiffany Morris

Lettering Hope is one of a series of paintings created with acrylics on canvas by the artist for inspiration simply as words in the series entitled Lettering Words. Each piece begins with a plain, solid color background wash. The base layer is allowed to dry completely before the next layer. The second layer is a light or darker shade of the base color, allowed to partially dry. Next, while the paint is still tacky, a third, fourth, and sometimes a fifth color is layered over the paint very quickly, and the letters are “finger-painted” on the canvas. Occasionally she chooses a third color once the painting has dried, in order to add depth, highlights, and dimension. Removal of portions of a wet layer supply the movement of script type lettering. Mindfulness practices while painting, recalling how the word, in this case “hope,” brings delightful soulful meditations. Patricia prints a Scripture verse relating to the word of each painting and memorizes and recites the passage while creating the artwork.
