Artist’s Statement

by James Wojno

Aquinna Beach, Martha’s Vineyard

One of the most healing and relaxing experience I know is to gaze out at vast expanses of water, ocean and sky, letting go of thoughts, and just breathing in the constant motion of waves and clouds. As a landscape photographer, I attempt I make images not to record a scene as it appears, but to compose an impression that will mentally and viscerally translate the essence of the scene, mixing reality with the dreamy, into a compelling two-dimensional photograph. I find the light at dusk or early morning the most interesting time for making images. These water and sky images hopefully convey a bit of silence, renewal, mystery, and awareness of a great life spirit.

Jim Wojno is landscape photographer and recently retired advertising graphic designer based in Lincoln, MA. He was fortunate to attend one of Ansel Adams’ last photographic workshops in Carmel, California, in 1982. Wojno has also attended workshops with other photographers, such as Joel Meyerowitz, Jerry Uelsmann, and John Szarkowski. Jim’s interests in classical music, design, zen practices, and architecture suffuse his carefully thought-out compositions and interpretation of a scene. His work derives from decades of exploring the American Southwest, coastal New England, Hawaii, Italy, and Patagonia. He exhibits in the Boston area and on Cape Cod and has won several awards. When not photographing or working in the digital darkroom, Wojno attends classical music concerts, works in the garden, cycles, kayaks, swims, cooks, and travels with his wife.
